DENTAL PREVENTION AT KREMLIN BICÊTRE

Dental hygiene and prophylaxis

Prophylaxis is defined as “all the means put in place to prevent the appearance, spread or worsening of a disease”.

Dental prophylaxis will therefore aim to prevent the appearance of cavities, periodontal or erosive diseases and to maintain optimal dental health throughout life.

Cavities, “loosening” and loss of teeth, dental abrasions and erosions… are not inevitable. If today, the clinical examination of your mouth reveals a satisfactory condition and your oral health does not present any symptoms commonly encountered in dentistry, this state of health remains precarious. The statistics are explicit: only 5% of the population will not encounter dental disease.

In our dental practice, all means are implemented to prevent the appearance of these pathologies and to stop their progression and worsening. Consequently, a prophylactic assessment and monitoring program will be offered to ensure good oral health. But oral prevention is not exclusively played out in the dental practice. Each patient must be an actor in their own oral health on a daily basis by adopting favorable behaviors in terms of oral hygiene and diet.

Prophylactic care includes oral hygiene education, dietary advice, assessment of caries, periodontal and erosive risks, application of fluoride varnish, placement of fissure sealants, scaling and root planing, etc., as well as follow-up or maintenance sessions.

Tooth decay:

Tooth decay is an infectious disease of bacterial origin that gradually destroys the tooth by demineralization of its hard tissues. It always progresses from the outside to the inside of the tooth, forming a cavity. It can lead to nerve damage or toothache, and/or dental abscess. The teeth become increasingly sensitive to sweet, cold, and hot foods.

But this disease does not develop in a regular way, it can even be reversible in the very early stages, and there is often a gap between the appearance of the first clinical signs of caries and sensitivity.

Periodontal diseases:

Periodontal diseases are bacterial (microbial) infections that affect and destroy the tissues that surround and support the teeth (the periodontium). The tissues involved are the gum, the attachment fibers (ligament or periodontium) and the bone that supports the teeth.

Erosive diseases:

Erosion is a surface dissolution of hard dental tissues by acids, harmful habits, excessive brushing… without the involvement of microorganisms.

The risk factors for developing these pathologies are numerous and well-known. We invite you to test your own individual caries and periodontal risk on the ufsbd website.
